Tropical Sonnet (2009)
by Lisa Rathbun-Read
(in non-iambic pentameter)
Uninhabited by human and gull
Long Sands Beach lays desolate and in waste
Tropical Storm Dan’s fury has no lull
We scramble from car to shelter in haste
Ghostly chairs rock swiftly to the cold breeze
Petunias cling tightly to the fence post
Temperatures drop like an Arctic freeze
Sand and rocks redistribute on the coast
Tumultuous waves dance beachward to die
Is this nature’s time to cry forth and weep?
The ocean soon relaxes with a sigh
So we can finally get a night’s sleep
Today will become a fresh memory
Tomorrow will begin a new story
